1. Equipment and Supplies
   • Clues of various sizes (paper, everyday objects, etc.)
   • Objects representing two bodies -- e.g. set of clothing, cardboard cutouts, etc.
2. Situation
   1. Candidates will be grouped into teams of specified size
   2. Candidate teams will search the area assigned to them while being observed by the evaluator.
   3. Candidates will demonstrate proper line search techniques, including use of trail tape.
   4. Candidates will demonstrate marking of clues using trail tape to the evaluator.
   5. Candidates will describe the search pattern they followed to the evaluator and estimate POD.
   6. Candidate teams will achieve 65% POD.
3. Training Officer Duties
   • Ensure that all equipment is available
   • Lay out search area course according to standard:
     • Size within bounds specified in standards
     • moderate terrain
     • area contains clues and bodies as specified in standard
   • Ensure that candidate teams can complete the evaluation without interfering with each other or leading each other to clues.
4. Evaluator instructions
   • Ensure that your search area conforms to standard
   • Enter your name, the date and names of team members being evaluated on checklist
   • Place a P next to each skill which was demonstrated successfully, place an "F" next to any skill which was not demonstrated properly in your judgement
   • If all skills demonstrated successfully mark checklist with "P", otherwise mark with "F"
   • Return completed checklist to training officer for archiving.
   • One evaluator or more should evaluate a whole search team moving through the course.
   • Candidates should receive a briefing along the lines of the following script:

           You are to search the area I assign to you by means of a line search with
           visual separation.  You must determine the correct spacing for your 
           team, and you should demonstrate the use of trail tape while you 
           perform your search.
     
           You are searching for clues appropriate to a subject [at this point
           the evaluator should describe the subject, e.g. child, adult nonsmoker,
           adult smoking Kamels, etc.].  There may be other clues in the area, you
           should ignore those.  The clues you're looking for all have distinctive
           markings [and the evaluator should describe them].  Each time you find a
           clue you should mark down its clue number and what type of object you
           found.  [if this is the last team running through this course, tell them
           to pick up the clues as they find them!]
     
           You are expected to acheive greater than 65% POD.  This will be measured
           by checking whether you have found greater than 65% of the clues that
           have been placed in the field.  You must determine when you have
           searched the area well enough to have acheived 65% POD.  When you return
           you will be debriefed and asked to give an estimate of your POD.
     

   • When candidates are finished with their search, ask them for their estimate of their POD. After you get their estimate, compare the number of clues they found to the number that you put out. If they have found greater than 65% of the clues they have passed this phase of the evaluation. If the fraction of clues they found is within 25 percentage points of their estimated POD they pass that phase of the evaluation.
   • Give the candidates a briefing similar to the script below:

          I have placed several clues in the immediate vicinity of where we are
          standing now.  Each one of you must now demonstrate to me how you would
          mark this clue in the field.
     

   • Observe each candidate separately marking a clue which you have placed near training incident base. Do not allow candidates to watch each other doing this!
